OUR MISSION
Citizens for Prairie Dogs is a Texas based non-profit association dedicated to the
preservation of prairie dogs.
All funds collected will be allocated only to projects involving the saving of
prairie dogs. The ONLY mission of Citizens for Prairie Dogs is to preserve the
lives of prairie dogs. While this organization respects the rights of landowners,
developers, and any government entity, we do NOT support ANY action that
results in the needless killing of prairie dogs. These actions we do not support
include lethal control of nuisance animals and any legislation which may
encourage directly or indirectly in the killing of prairie dogs on public or private
lands.
Our motto is “Who Cares? WE Care.”
THE PRAIRIE DOGS IN LUBBOCK NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
We want the public to not only be aware of inhumane treatment of prairie dogs here in Lubbock and the surrounding areas, we want all of us to come together and help them. No one person can do it all but collectively we can improve the treatment of these animals. In today’s world, there is no excuse for cruelty of any kind. Please help us speak up and make positive changes in Lubbock.
I. The Parks and Recreation Dept. in Lubbock still insists on poisoning prairie dogs across the city. Sometimes it makes sense that the prairie dogs are not wanted on certain properties, but they do not have to be cruelly killed with neuro toxins. These animals die a horrific death when all they are doing is trying to live. Just like you or I do. God gave us the brains and resources. Let’s use them and relocate-- not decimate. This is public land, it is owned by all of us-- not only the few leaders. There are other places such as McAllister Park that was originally supposed to be turned into a nature preserve. Well, several years ago the city went and poisoned a huge area. This impacts not only the prairie dogs but the other wildlife—rabbits, hawks, burrowing owls, coyotes etc. Unbelievable the cruelty….There really is no reason for this. They also usually wait till the females are pregnant or the babies are just born. It just compounds their cruelty.
II. Prairie Dog Town in Mackenzie Park is a prime example of intentional starvation and cruelty. Yes, they look healthy. They aren’t. Citizens for Prairie Dogs has fed them regularly since November 2003. The problem is that these prairie dogs need grass and forbs for their nutrition and moisture requirements. It is inhumane to close in this area and not provide what they need. Inexcusable. The city only needs to grow grasses, which they tried one time before but unfortunately they did not install a very good irrigation system. It did not water enough areas for the grass to even get started. It is very do-able. The city simply does not want to spend money on animals. They want to reap the rewards of having this park, yet they do not want to be responsible.
Please email and/or call the following city leaders and express your feelings about their poison campaigns and their starvation of the iconic prairie dogs.
